Once upon a time I couldn't get you off of my mind So I turned to the bottle the way the love sick do But now a love forsaken is the least of my concerns I've got better things to drink about than you I've got bigger burdens deeper doubts Tougher things to figure out There's a lot more trouble on my mind these days Though you had me in an awful stew I must admit those days are through I've got better things to drink about than you I've been seeing hard times like I've never seen before The future's looking dark ahead, I don't know what to do To worry about a love that's lost is just a luxury I've got better things to drink about than you I've got bigger burdens deeper doubts Tougher things to figure out There's a lot more trouble on my mind these days Though you had me in an awful stew I must admit those days are through I've got better things to drink about than you I've got better things to drink about than you

Slow Train 04:50
The train that left this morning is a different kind of line The last to leave impressions, the first to leave on time As I watch the morning shadows take the sunrise to the sky The morning people they smile at me as they pass me right on by This train is moving slow Still so many miles to go I won't get there soon, won't get there soon The world is passing by If there weren't this hesitation by now I'd be at my destination Won't get there soon The world is passing by This slow train Friends I knew have long since gone my coat still wears their dust And the slowly spinning wheels I'm on have taken time to rust I try to take my mind away I read a magazine On every page the faces flaunt the things I've never seen on This train moving slow Still so many miles to go I won't get there soon, won't get there soon The world is passing by If there weren't this hesitation by now I'd be at my destination Won't get there soon The world is passing by This slow train A flimsy apparition floats past with smiling ease Like the clouds that creep the day away, like the buzzard over me Now if I was that buzzard, my job would be all through And then I would be free again instead of sitting like a fool on This train moving slow Still so many miles to go I won't get there soon, won't get there soon The world is passing by If there weren't this hesitation by now I'd be at my destination Won't get there soon The world is passing by This slow train

I've done some stupid things in my life I've got enough to regret But that hasn't stopped me from being a fool Not just yet If I only had sense I'd admit she won't love me But I can't think straight at all I may go down in flames But I wouldn't be the first one to fall Cause I've got The most socially accepted mental disease in the world I can't sleep at night Got no appetite Man, I'm a mess It's gone from bad to worse to ridiculous Lord I wish there was a cure For the most socially accepted mental disease in the world I flip through station on the radio Every song sounds exactly the same Every singer is crazy And it's love that drove them insane With the billions of people there are in this world The hearts could only yearn for one Sure seems outrageous Too bad it's contagious I've got The most socially accepted mental disease in the world I can't sleep at night Got no appetite Man, I'm a mess It's gone from bad to worse to ridiculous Lord I wish there was a cure For the most socially accepted mental disease I'm horribly affected Someone help me please The most socially accepted mental disease in the world

There's a broken bottle by my doorstep A trail of mud that leads me to my shoes On my message machine there's someone saying "Buddy, you're a fool" And on my arm there's a mystery bruise Oh what in the world did I do last night? What in the world did I do last night besides drinking? What in the world did I do? There must have been something I did that was wrong Must have been something I did to wear the mark Of a mystery bruise How I'm dreading all the stories I'm sure to hear today I don't think I'll be picking up the phone I made my friends all hate me for the last time From now on I'll do my drinking on my own I've got to get my head together somehow With these aspirin I'm sure to make a start The bruise that's on my arm hurts to remind me That there's no mystery about the bruise I've had on my heart Oh what in the world did I do last night? What in the world did I do last night besides drinking? What in the world did I do? There must have been something I did that was wrong Must have been something I did to wear the mark Of a mystery bruise

Please don't make me think about you Cause I know where thoughts like those will finally end Please don't make me think about you As anything more than just a friend I don't want to lay awake thinking how things could be All those broken dreams would make a wreck of me So please don't be so cute and charming You should know by now that my heart might fly away Please don't call me little darling Cause I might try to make you mean everything you say And I don't want to lay awake thinking how things could be All those broken dreams would make a wreck of me So please don't make me think about you As anything more than just a friend Please don't make me think about you Cause I know where thoughts like those will finally end Please don't make me think about you As anything more than just a friend As anything more than just a friend

Take 02:58
Take my car If it gets you where you want to be Take my money It doesn't mean anything Take my hand If it happens that you have the need To just take Take my guitar I'll sing my songs in my head Take my song It's nothing that hasn't been said Take my hand You're not the only one who's afraid So just take Take my love It's the only thing real I can give Take my dreams I'll find a new place to live Take it all If it happens that you have the need To just take Just take

I've got three payments that I have to make Or there's gonna be some trouble around here It was a bit unexpected I thought there was some mistake But now it's only too clear There's one for the times of laughable dares One for the secrets that never got shared One for the quitter who messed up the game I've got three payments that I have to make Don't mind me if I seem disturbed This check is signed in blood This addressee's name is mud Oh, how did things get so damn out of control? There was nothing for us to choose Now I'm left again with a crumpled up friend Telling tales about paying your dues Sometimes it's expensive to keep yourself alive But how can a body refuse maybe the price of it all Is watching the ones you love fall How did things get so damn out of control? There was nothing for us to choose Now I'm left again with a crumpled up friend And more tales about paying your dues Paying your dues

Don't want to hear words of cheer Don't tell me there's a party Can't you see I'll be staying at home? When you knocked upon my door You should have needed nothing more Than to hear I was playing George jones If you hear me playing George Jones Take the hint Leave me alone Cause when i play Tender Years It's not because I'm waiting For the next good thing to appear And when I cry Why Baby Why Rest assured it ain't no lie Things have gone to pieces around here If you hear me playing George Jones Take the hint Leave me alone I know you're only trying to help me With a kind consoling word But be forewarned the mood I'm in spreads easily And so it's best for all concerned To keep your distance till it's turned From shots of whisky to coffee and cream And if you hear me playing George Jones Take the hint Leave me alone Take the hint Leave me alone

When I'm feeling lonesome When I'm sad and blue I thank heaven for the family That I can turn to All we have is each other We're a household of three The bottle, the shot glass and me If you want a happy family The love has to flow It might burn you when it hits you But that way you'll know That you have the strong spirit And the good chemistry Like the bottle, the shot glass and me If you've got nobody to turn to In a crowd you still feel all alone If everybody that you've trusted has burned you Then at our house you'll feel right at home All we have is each other A household of three The bottle, the shot glass and me The bottle, the shot glass and me

You screamed through all the memories still on your skin It won't be my sin You take the blame So I had myself a drink for old times anyway So far away From the flame At least you won't be lonely At least you won't be lonely anymore At least you won't be lonely At least you won't be lonely anymore You cry like a little child When the helping hands Are all gone Spare yourself and hang on to a little pride Just let it ride Sing your song At least you won't be lonely At least you won't be lonely anymore At least you won't be lonely At least you won't be lonely anymore There's no need for resistance When things just fall apart I don't need a hero to rescue me I thought you said you knew that from the start You once said the road was looking ragged You once believed you'd been here for too long But even if you have to lose your everything You're gonna find a way to carry on And at least you won't be lonely At least you won't be lonely anymore At least you won't be lonely At least you won't be lonely anymore

about

Originally released in 1996, my first record was recorded in a garage on an early ADAT machine. Most of the songs were already years old- demoed on a Tascam cassette 4-track. I was near broke and in the midst of a very dark time, having lost three close friends (in addition to the usual heartbreaks). I was drinking a lot and feeling quite sorry for myself. And yet I was in a new city (Los Angeles) searching for new possibilities, and had scrounged up enough gear to make this low-fi collection of drinking songs geared for a party of one. For this 25th anniversary I dug up the 4-track demo of Mystery Bruise, for those who like things even more rough than this record already is.
